I Recently purchased a 90 mustang with an sn89 on it . The car only has 51k original miles on it and and the paxton has been on there for almost 30k of that . It also has a fluid cooler on it as well added after about half of those miles . I have not had a boost gauge on it yet but it seems to be working well enough. It also has the original pulley sizes installed so it was never overspun . My question is about a rattling noise at idle after it has warmed up . I remember this car when it was 1st installed as I did the installtion and i don't remember it being this loud . Is the rattling a big problem or normal wear ? also can I continue to run it or should i pull it off now to stop any damage . The fluid was changed on a regular basis also and the car was never really hammered on . Thanks in advance.

pavement pounde
On low idle it may rattle a litle bit, if you up the idle to lets say 900+ rpm is it gone then ?
There is always a little room between the ballcarier and balls, if it does it at cruise and higher then idle then you need to replace the ballcarier.

whodwho
Probably the oil pump rattle and why they put a spring around it to load them to the side on later models
It definatly goes away above an idle . It sounds fine under cruise . i'm just a little jumpy because it has so many miles on it. I don't want to make anything worse if there is an issue . I'd like to take it to the track in a couple of weeks but if there is already a problem i just did not want to make it any worse . I'm about to upgrade the cooler from the little power steering one to a full size stack plate tranny cooler with 6an lines. Thanks for your replies i feel a little better about the unit now. Although I'll probably rebuild it as soon as $ allows.:blob: Can I add the spring around the pump on this unit ? Has anyone done it ?
