There was an article in MMFF magazine where some guy was running 10's in a 3000 lb car and had over 250 passes on a stock late model block. I had a Mexican block that was making 720 RWHP with a Tremec, and it didn't break, but I didn't put a lot of passes on it. I hear the B50 block is even better than the Mexican. I'd say go for it.
I can tell you right now from experience that a sportsman block is crap. The difference between that and a Mexican or stock block is marginal. We snapped ours on the first pass. We dyno'd at 604 to the rearwheel and at 6500 rpms. Oh ya it was 0 balanced with a girdle and all very good parts inside, no crap. The stories of people running stock blocks and living are nice but do you really wanna risk everything? Oh and just for the record Randy at PER was able to save everything but the cam and put it into a R302. If your gonna risk it use it a girdle. If we didn't all the main cap pieces would have fell off and destroyed the crank rods etc.
