Now what the....

Well I just typed this and it didn't take so that just adds to the day. Ok I got the timing chain cover back on today and just used the black rtv to make the lower gasket. I get the cover tightened down, and start putting the water pump on. When I put the cover on I noticed a stud in the block on the top right corner of the cover as you are facing it. Well now that I am trying to get the water pump on, that stud is in the way of putting a bolt in that hole for the pump. Is the stud suppsoed to be there, or is the bolt for the pump? Its been 3 weeks since I started this, so I can't remember, but I know I didn't put the stud there. I would love to be able to finish this before the new year, but at this rate, its going to be close. This is why I pay people to do this for me.

I can look at my car when I get home,, but I think there is a long stud that comes out of that hole and a nut goes on it,, Bee

Sorry, forgot to mention that the stud only comes about half way through the timing chain cover. Its not long enough to get to the pump, which is why it has me concerned....

Ok I said forget it and took the cover off for about the 5th time this project. Here is a picture of the stud that seems to be in the way. Now I am at a complete loss, because where this bolt goes on the pump, is right next to the water passage, and I am afraid it'll leak...

Chris, not sure where the heck that stud came from but it should not be there. You should have a long bolt with a stud on the end that goes there, if that makes sense. Give me a little bit & I can snap a pic of the bolt for you if needed.

You know Sean, I was thinking the same thing. Thats why I pulled the cover back off. But if you look, that stud has been there a while. I mean its even got the little bit of surface rust on it. I just don't get it. So I said screw it, threw everything back together, and will fire it up in the morning, praying everything works. I looked EVERYWHERE and I could not find an extra stud that would have been long enough to go in there. If this doesn't work, I still have an extra can of gas laying around.... :D

Chris, if you can't get a nut on that stud you need to pull it and run a bolt thru there or you will definetely get a leak. Can't explain why it'd be there, maybe the previous owner did that and you just got lucky by not having a leak, but nonetheless that stud is not "normal"....

I kind of looked at it this way. I had the stock water pump on there, and it worked fine. I then had my first Stewart pump on there, and it worked fine. Had to replace it, and its been ok since. I just don't know where that thing came from, plus with not finding the "missing" bolt that would have gone there, then there never was one. This is just amazing. I wasn't in the mood to deal with it anymore today. I am just waiting to fire it up tomorrow. IF it leaks, then I can probably have that thing torn down in less than an hour since I have done it 5 times. Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens in the morning.

Best of luck then, if I were you my 1st trip would be to a hardware store to pick up a new bolt :D

did the end of the bolt break off at some point??? you can get to nuts and lock them together on the stud and try to take it out. then go buy a replacement bolt.

No, the stud looks like it has been there for years, which is why I can't figure out whats going on. I have a feeling I'll be buying a new stud tomorrow, but its already together. Guess thats what happens when you run out of patience. :mad:

Chris I see you have the a/c delete kit! I had the same kit and that stud is actually used for the kit! Yes it is supposed to go there by the factory, but it is also used for the a/c delete kit! The black plate for the a/c delete kit slides over that stud, and than the nut goes on top of it!

Maybe the stud broke? Because it is supposed to go all the way through the water pump!

Well I got the car fired up today. First thing I saw, coolant leaking from the thermostat housing of all places. I have NEVER had it leak there before! :rolleyes: Of course this is the first time I used a gasket with some rtv. So I ditched the gasket and went back to just rtv. I'm waiting for it to dry to fire it back up.

One thing though. It sounds like the rockers on the drivers side are ticking REAL bad. This wasn't the case prior to doing the job, but at the same time, the car hasn't been started in 3 weeks. Could they just be lacking oil right now?

One last thing. How will I know if I got the timing chain off by a link or 2 when I reinstalled it? Will it run bad? Make noises? Just curious because I have never done this before so its all new to me.

Chris it may take a little bit for the lifters to fully pump-up, I'd let it go for now & see if it still does it after the car is up to oper temp.

On the timing chain, you should be good to go if you lined up the dots on the crankshaft sprocket (12 o'clock) and the camshaft (6 o'clock), being off a tooth or two is pretty evident if you are looking at the "dots"
