New Cam-Think I got it right this time

I've been running a .498/.498 220/220 114lsa cam for about 2.5 years. This cam was a pretty bad *** blower cam for someone in my shoes 2.5 yrs ago. It is a custom grind from Crane, at the time of purchase I was on a stock shortblock, edle 1.90 heads, edle rpm int and S-Trim @ 8psi. I couldnt run any bigger of a cam without notchin the pistons. Cam has been great, idles like a champ and I even made 457rw/438tq on my 302 and 544rw/562tq (with my 331). It is good to 6k.
Now when i went to the 331, i just transfered all my parts over.

I ran the 1.90 heads and .498 cam for about 1.5-2 years in my 331 with great luck, ran deep 11s @126mph, and the car drives great. Just this h/c package wasnt ideal for a 331 (small heads and cam) not getting the full potential
Well I finally upgraded, and now have TrickFlow TW 2.02s Stage 2d, and have decided to change the cam...to something designed for this combo, and not a 302/small head/low boost.

The car has changed quite abit since i got the cam grinded for the car...this is how i sit now

After doing my homework on what would work best in my car, speaking with many diff companies...this is what I have come to, Cam Motion hit it dead on in my eyes...emailed cam motion all my cars specs, and they practically hit it dead nuts what i was thinking!

This cam should scream with the blower, due to it being so friendly on the exh side.
My idle should be great like it was with the small cam, due to the lobe sep of 114.

Any input?

I think you hit the nail on the head. That is an extremely potent combo in my eyes. That cam should work very good with the TW heads.

Also the goal for this car is high 10 sec street car with all the driveability as any other car on the road, with a/c and power steering and all the creepin comforts.
I will still drive it the same...to work 2-3 times a week, and weekends.

Yeah I doubt you have any issues going high tens. What's your fuel system?

I was thinkin if it trys to go lean during the tune, turn the fp up a lil...during the new tune. I'm thinking this is the only factor in holding me back power wise.

And of course the weak-link...stock blockage.

How much will this fuel hold me back

Also I was thinking this cam is worth maybe 10-15hp more than the other...seem right?

yeah that sounds about right.


You'll either have to dial the boost back or do the big fuel upgrade before you dyno it. I think it will want to make at least 575@ the tires.

Sounds good, I plugged in your cam to see how it compared to another custom cam I had on file in Desktop Dyno designed for a blown 331. Your's has a better torque curve, but the horsepower curves are almost identical. These are the specs on the one I compared it with. This one makes some more power up top though and starts shining past 6500.

Dunno, but to me that custom cam sounds alot like a TFS stage 2.

Sure is pretty close...but there is alot more to a cam than just lift/dur #'s
This cam is better suited for my combo than the stage 2 (i looked at it for the price) then after i saw that there is so much more than the numbers (lift/dur) and they explained it all..it was a easy choice. Blower cars love high lsa also.

Also a 114lsa is much much better in a blower car and my idle:)

I have a simmular cam to that. It specs out at

Duration:232 int / 242 ext @ .050
Lift .540 int / .560 ext
112 lsa (I can't remeamber off hand is it is 112 or 114)

On the dyno it started signing off at 6200 rpm.

The cam is lopy but still very drivable. I don't get stumbling untill it is down below 1500 rpm. It makes good power on my combo and I the car even passed IL emmisions with it. I am very happy with it.

This is with 93 octane and a very safe tune. More to come with the new Dart block!

What kinda boost?

13-14#. I had some belt slippage as the belt was brand new. We tightened it after every pass and it still was stretching. Timming was 18degrees at max boost. That was also with a ported truck lower and sheet metal box upper, not the ported Holley. I hope to make more torque and power with the holley this year. We also stopped tuning the car because of 500+rwhp and a stock block.

i have a cam like this now with a 113lsa like frdfandc posted.befor i had a 110 lsa with 80 degrees overlap and had 14% overdrive on the SC for 20lbs of boost and the guage read 6.my point is with less lsa and more overlap more flow gose out the exhaust.i was loosing 14lbs out the exhaust.no i don't have a ford but the point is the same with the LSA.thank you for listening.
