I have a stock 91 302 that i am putting a weiand 174 on with 8-9 psi pullies. I have a 750 edelbrock,130 gph pump, 3/8" fuel line running 5.5 lbs pressure. where should i start with timing. I am new to blowers so any help would be great.

With an automatic trans, shoot for 10-12 BTDC of initial @ idle and all in by approx. 2500 RPM. With a stick, around 10 degrees BTDC. Start at 30 degrees BTDC total advance and work your way up to around 32-35 degrees. (depending on your combination; aluminum or steel heads, static compression ratio/dynamic compression ratio, quality/octane rating of gasoline to be used)Quote:

Thanks for the info. I have stock steel heads, 9:1 compression (about 14:1 with boost) stick running 91 pump fuel. I started with 14 inital and 32 total in by 2500 but blew a head gasket within 150 km. Replacing the gaskets tomorrow. I think i need to use higher octane fuel. I was also told running water/meth injection will allow me to run pump fuel
You might want to check your jetting, sounds lean to me because 8-9 PSI of boost on a 9:1 motor should not have blown a head gasket. I have ran 8-9 lbs of boost (and more) with a 9.2:1 motor and never lost a head gasket. What do the plugs look like? Is there damage on the pistons? If so, what side of the pistons are damaged, the intake manifold side or the exhaust manifold side? There's something going on that doesn't meet the eye.
plugs are a light brown, No damage to the pistions. is it possible that i had to much timing
I doubt it. 32 degrees should not have been enough to blow a head gasket with 8-9 PSI unless you were running 86/87 octane gasoline. I built more than one B&M blower motor and not had a problem with compressoin ratios and boost values at what you're running. Was the gas old? 91 octane??
O, BTW, if you want to sell that 174, lemme know.
had 1/4 tank of old gas & topped it up with fresh, so it should have been good. I just bought the blower, not interseted in selling it. I may know for a 174 kit for sale, he bought it new & decided not to use it. He wanted $2000. I check ASAP
Not sure why it blew a head gasket then. Seems like you covered all of the bases.
Let me know if your friend still has the 174. (Is it polished or satin?)
