    Questioning my choice of gears

The more I read on here the more I see people with 3:73's in their sigs. I have a set of 3:55's waiting to go into my car. What do you think I should go with? Car is a 1990 coupe that will have h/c/i with blower.

edit: All this wonderful power will be going thru a Tremec TKO

If you are building for 1/4 mile times then calculate your estimated trap speed and find out if your gears get you there at your peak power RPM.

For example, my trap speed is 144. I run a 26" slick so 3.50 gears are near perfect at 6,800 RPM. At 6,800 RPM my maximum speed in drive is 150 mph.

It depends what you want to do with the car. If it's a street toy, I would stick with the 355's you have, if it's a drag car you match the gear with your powerband and tire set up as is mentioned above. A lot of guys here have 3.73's not because it was the ideal choice for a blower but most likely because most Mustang people do gears as an early mod when the car is N/A and 3.73's are a popular choice. Rest assured with 3.55's, a blower along with your other parts all stuffed in a light Coupe, you'll have little trouble spinning the tires gently stepping into it in second gear. I've got 3.55's in my big blown 3700 lb boat and it spins the tires with ease in second and even slips 'em in 3rd.

stick w/ the 355s i have 373 for the same reason thehawk05 stated above and i am thinking about swaping them out for 355s. one reason is i am driving on the street a good bit and first gear is useless and another reason being that i bought used gears and they whine so that noise really drives me crazy.

Ive always liked the 3.55s and they go perfect with a blower IMO. 3.73s seem like they would be a waste, like that power would spin instead of getting to the groud.

I'm running 3.55's in my coupe and it's working out great. I'm getting close to the end of 4th gear at the end of the 1/4 at 6k rpm so I wouldn't want to go up.

Agree with Hawk, I'm on my 3rd set of gears not counting the stock 3.08's. I had 3.73's, went to 4.10's, got the blower and eventually went to 3.55's in anticipation of turning up the boost and adding a bit more power. I sure did miss those 4.10's as they were a blast to drive, but at least I could cross the 1/4 now w/o smacking the rev limiter (6200) 150 ft. before the line.

With everything said, like the others said about calculating the trap speed... I agree, but if your motor doesn't put that much hp out than usually people buy the 3:73's or the 4:10's to get a faster time, but if your motor has hp, than there is no reason to go anywhere past 3:55!

Instead of having the gears making your car faster! Have your motor make the car faster :)

I am assuming you all run on a 26 inch tire w/ 3:55's?
