Im no motor expert, but thats about 520 to the wheels
(auto 20% loss)... That would be pushing it on the stock block. Isnt the B50 block supposed to be rated 50-100HP stronger then a stock block?
I thought they were safe up to 700FWHP. Ide like to know though, becuase i plan on building a combo similar to yours, and im wondering if i can get away with the Sportsman block safetly.

    Hmmm

I would try it. But, I would put a girdle on it, it would help. Hey, I see you are running a Lentech AOD Strip Terminator, do you like it and what upgrades do yours have. I will be ordering one in about two weeks.

Funny. I was just talking about this with 302Man tonight. I really think at 650 HP, (my opinion) you might never break a B50 block. If it was a regular late model, it still may last a long time. There was an article in MMFF magazine where some guy was running 10's in a 3000 lb car and had over 250 passes on a stock late model block. I had a Mexican block that was making 720 RWHP with a Tremec, and it didn't break, but I didn't put a lot of passes on it. I hear the B50 block is even better than the Mexican. I'd say go for it.

I can tell you right now from experience that a sportsman block is crap. The difference between that and a Mexican or stock block is marginal. We snapped ours on the first pass. We dyno'd at 604 to the rearwheel and at 6500 rpms. Oh ya it was 0 balanced with a girdle and all very good parts inside, no crap. The stories of people running stock blocks and living are nice but do you really wanna risk everything? Oh and just for the record Randy at PER was able to save everything but the cam and put it into a R302. If your gonna risk it use it a girdle. If we didn't all the main cap pieces would have fell off and destroyed the crank rods etc.

    Mi-Te Pakman

I feel your pain Pakman. I don't dispute anything you are saying. I have heard that it can be a hit-or-miss when overpowering a block. I made 720 RWHP on a Mexican Block, and yes, I also had a girdle. I have heard that girdles do little to prevent breakage. I agree, as long as one has the money for an "R" or A4 block, that is the best insurance. In fact, I pulled my Mexican Block out, put the reciprocating assembly in my A4 block, and sold the Mexican Block and girdle because I was afraid I "might" be on borrowed time. But I also believe that it is possible to get away with it ( for a while) if you are not hitting nitrous out of the gate with a dead hook in the 650+ HP zone, or you are not a frequent track car. Anyways, maybe you are proof that the sportsman block may not even be as good as a Mexican block? Interesting comment.
